Identify the vagina. This elastic fibromuscular canal, about 7 to 9 cm. long, extends from the vestibule of the vagina to the cervix of the uterus.

Examine the internal surface of the vagina and identify the transverse folds, called the rugae vaginales, which are found on both its anterior wall and posterior wall. Identify the vaginal orifice located in the vestibule of the vagina. It is surrounded by the remnants of the hymen, the hymenal caruncles.

The cervix projects into the lumen of the vagina. Surrounding the cervix are the fornices that are formed between the vaginal part of the cervix and walls of the vagina.
