Now, study the uterus and examine its position and relationship with respect to the urinary bladder and the rectum. The anterior surface of the uterus is normally anteflexed and anteverted, therefore it rests on the superior surface of the urinary bladder. The uterus is a pear-shaped, muscular organ. It is divided into the body, fundus, isthmus and the cervix. The most inferior portion of the uterus is the cylindrical-in-shape uterine cervix. The inferior one-third of the cervix is surrounded by the vagina and is called the vaginal part of the cervix. This part can be seen from the vagina. Identify the external os, which leads into the cervical canal. The internal os communicates with the cavity of the uterus.
