The primary objective of this exercise will be to study the regions of the pharynx: nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx (Figure 31.1). Examination of these regions is best accomplished by using a posterior approach to the pharynx and then viewing the pharyngeal regions in a hemisected specimen.

Therefore the head will be disarticulated from the vertebral column at the atlantooccipital joint and will be reflected anteriorly. This allows the anatomy of the retropharyngeal region to be studied. Subsequently, the organization of structures in parapharyngeal spaces will be studied. Finally, the head will be bisected to view the regions of the pharynx.
