The anterior lateral mucosa fold is the palatoglossal fold; the posterior lateral mucosa fold is the palatopharyngeal fold [probe] (Figure 31.4). These folds cover the palatoglossus muscle and the palatopharyn- geus muscle, respectively. The palatine tonsil [cross-section] is located between the folds and rests in the tonsilar fossa [probe]. Lymphoid tissue, called the lingual tonsil [probe] is present at the base of the tongue. Posterior to the tongue and anterior to the epiglottis, identify the vallecula. The vallecula is a depression between the base of the tongue and the anterior surface of the epiglottis. The vallecula is divided into right and left parts by a median glossoepiglottic fold [probe].
