The rectus femoris muscle assists in flexion at the hip joint. All four parts of the quadriceps femoris muscle insert into the quadriceps (or patellar) tendon and thus function in the extension of the knee. Distal to the patella, identify the patellar ligament that inserts into the tuberosity of the tibia.
