Return to the dorsum of the foot and identify the cutaneous branches of the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. Identify the dorsal digital branches of the superficial peroneal nerve that provide cutaneous innervation to most of the skin of the toes. Cutaneous branches of the deep peroneal nerve are present between the metatarsal bones of the great toe and the adjacent toe. They convey cutaneous innervation from this limited region. Sensation from the remainder of the dorsum of the foot is carried by the superficial peroneal nerve. The cutaneous nerves of the plantar surface, or sole, of the foot will be dissected when the foot is dissected.
