Identify the inferior vena cava, which is formed by the union of the right common iliac vein and left common iliac vein at the level of the L5 vertebra. The common iliac veins lie posterior to common iliac arteries. The inferior vena cava leaves the abdominal cavity by passing through the hiatus of inferior vena cava, which is located in the tendinous portion of the diaphragm at the level of the T8 vertebra.Identify the following veins which join the inferior vena cava in the abdominal cavity: renal veins , right suprarenal vein, right gonadal (testicular or ovarian) vein, inferior phrenic veins, and hepatic veins. On the left side of the posterior abdominal wall identify the left suprarenal vein and left (testicular or ovarian) vein which join the left renal vein (Figure 40.6).
