To demonstrate the distinctive features of the jejunum and ileum, remove them from the abdominal cavity. First, tie two strings around the proximal jejunum just below the duodenojejunal flexure and another two strings around the ileum, just proximal to the ileocecal junction . Cut through the intestine between the strings at both sites, and free the jejunum and ileum from the mesentery along its entire length. Remove the jejunum and the ileum from the abdominal cavity.

Observe that the diameter and thickness of the muscular wall of the small intestine decrease from the proximal jejunum to
the distal ileum.
