Examine the superior and posterior aspects of the larynx, and identify the epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds [probe] that border the opening to the larynx. The paired piriform recesses are located laterally to the opening of the larynx. These recesses are common sites for cancer of the throat.

Palpate the small arytenoid cartilage located on the superior aspect of the lamina of the cricoid cartilage. The cricoid cartilage lies at the level of the C6 vertebra and is the only complete cartilaginous ring of the airway.
