To open the left ventricle [cross-section], make an L-shaped incision on the sternocostal surface of the heart. The cut should extend through the anterior wall of the ascending aorta parallel and just to the left of the interventricular groove (Figure 20.5). When cutting the ascending aorta, cut between the right and left coronary cusps of the aortic valve. To facilitate the opening of this ventricle, the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery and great cardiac vein are cut.
