On the interatrial wall [cross-section], locate the fossa ovalis [cross-section ]. This smooth, oval depression is the remnant of the fetal foramen ovale. In a small percentage of individuals, this foramen remains patent throughout life. In about 15 to 25 percent of hearts, the foramen is not functionally open; however, a probe can be pushed through an opening in the foramen ovale.
