Reflect the medial borders of the lungs laterally and identify the root of each lung [root of left lung, isolated specimen] [root of right lung, isolated specimen]. These roots are the conduits through which blood vessels, nerves, lymphatics, and bronchii enter and leave each lung.

Note that the root of the lung is surrounded by parietal pleura which is continuous with the visceral pleura of the lungs. At the inferior border of the root of each lung attempt to identify the pulmonary ligament [dissected specimen]. It is a reflection of the pleura that extends inferiorly
towards the diaphragm.
