Fibrocartilaginous discs, called menisci , lie between the condyles of the femur and tibia. The inner margins of the menisci are thin and free; the outer margins of the menisci are thicker and attach to the fibrous capsule. The medial meniscus is the larger of the two. It attaches to the medial collateral ligament. The lateral meniscus is more circular in shape and is not attached to either collateral ligament. The transverse ligament spans between the anterior aspect of the two menisci.
