On the anterior aspect of the capsule of the hip joint, a very strong y-shaped ligament, called the iliofemoral ligament [another specimen ], blends with the capsule. This ligament lies deep to the iliopsoas muscle. The iliofemoral ligament arises near the anterior inferior iliac spine. The fibers of the ligament broaden inferiorly and attach to the entire length of the intertrochanteric line. This is an important ligament that contributes significantly to the stability of the hip joint. It prevents hyperextension of the hip joint when standing.
