Steps 3 to 9, dissection of the plantar surface of the foot with the cadaver in the prone position. The muscles are arranged in four layers, which will be described.

On the plantar surface (sole) of the foot, make a longitudinal mid-line incision and reflect the skin and superficial fascia from the mid-line. The skin of the foot is thicker than it is in other regions of the body. The skin adheres to the underlying deep fascia, called plantar aponeurosis which lies superficial to the first layer of muscles of the foot.
