- tibialis anterior muscle
- extensor digitorum longus muscle
- extensor hallucis longus muscle [probe; retractor holds the extensor digitorum longus muscle]
- peroneus tertius muscle that arises from the extensor digitorum longus muscle tendons
As the muscles are freed from one another, their proximal sites of origin can be identified. The muscles of the anterior compartment insert distally and function in movements of the ankle and toes. Pull on the tendons of these muscles to verify their actions.
