The glenohumeral joint connects the humerus to the scapula. To fully expose the joint, the pectoralis major muscle and deltoid muscle have to be reflected laterally and the pectoralis minor muscle removed.
Before the joint is opened, identify the:- fibrous part of the articular capsule which covers the head of the humerus
- attachment of the short head of the biceps brachii muscle to the coracoid process
- long head of the biceps brachii muscle, which is covered by synovial membrane as it passes through the joint cavity
- transverse humeral ligament, which lies anterior to the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii muscle
- coracohumeral ligament
