Next, examine the flexor retinaculum [the pipe cleaner passes deep to the flexor retinaculum]. It is a fibrous band that functions to hold the flexor tendons of the hand in place on the anterior surface of the wrist. Push a probe through the space located deep to the flexor retinaculum.

The space between the flexor retinaculum and the underlying carpal bones creates the space called the carpal tunnel.
