The three smaller branches of the posterior cord of the brachial plexus lie anterior to the subscapularis muscle. Identify them as they are traced to the muscles that they supply. The upper subscapular nerve supplies the subscapularis muscle. The lower subscapular nerve [medial to scissors] gives branches to the subscapularis muscle and also supplies the teres major muscle. The thoracodorsal nerve supplies the latissimus dorsi muscle. It is also called the nerve to the latissimus dorsi muscle.
